As we all know we have a problem of keeping track of time. The Jade Emporer of Heaven has wisely solved this. By staging a race, any animal that crosses the line will be in the new calendar in the order they finish.
一
Rat can't swim so blagged a lift-off Ox.
Travelling on Ox's head, crossing the river he hatched a plan to kick a co-passenger off.
When reaching the shore he jumps off his head to secure first place by using smarts rather than action.

Ox was kind hearted enough to let 2 animals travel on him while crossing. He didn't expect Rat to just jump off and take first place when he's done all the work. His expression shows how he feels about that.

Turned down Rat when he asked to ride on him. Tiger had a straightforward race. Apart from when another participant bumped into him while being washed downstream.

Rabbit can also not swim but used agility, jumping from rock to stone. Slipped on a log and floated downstream but Dragon helped out. Takes 4th place.

Dragon can fly over the river but isn't interested in taking 1st place. Instead focusing on helping other animals getting to the finish line. Dragon is our MVP.

Just beaten horse to the finish by coming out of a bush scaring him.

He also turned down Rat for a ride on his back. Swimming well across the river he got startled by Snake.

Sheep, Monkey and Rooster built a raft together. Through the power of teamwork, they were able to get across.

Monkey and Rooster both agreed sheep should cross first. This is because they were the most harmonious and supportive. It's not about the winning but the friends you make on the way

Rooster was happy going last in the group. His Earthly branch character will be 酉 meaning Unity.
The race crosses a river in which the participants will have to overcome.

Dog is a great swimmer, but had too much fun in the water. Eventually crossed the line to take 11th Place.

Dog was slow in finishing but Pig was much slower. Eat, slept and finished after waking up.
Did not qualify
Was riding on the head of Ox with his 'trusted' friend Rat. Was very certain to take 1st place and Rat knew this. Cat was kicked off and was taken downstream to never finish the race.
That is why there will not be a year of the Cat, and never will be. A betrayal like this might create hate between Rats and Cats for a good while.
